Azer Gasimli Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison

On March 11, the Baku Court for Serious Crimes announced the verdict in the case of Azer Gasimli, head of the Institute of Political Management. The court, chaired by Judge Elmin Rustamov, sentenced Gasimli to 12 years in prison.
Earlier, the state prosecutor had requested a 13-year prison sentence.
In his final statement in court, Gasimli declared his innocence and said that his arrest was politically motivated. According to him, the charges lack credible evidence and witnesses.
Azer Gasimli was detained on December 8, 2024. He was charged under Article 182.2.3 of the Criminal Code (extortion involving threats or violence).
Gasimli denies the accusations and maintains that his detention is politically motivated. His lawyers state that there is a court decision confirming that the person recognized as the victim owed Gasimli money.
